France great David Trezeguet has backed Antoine Griezmann’s decision to stay put with Atletico Madrid for the 2018/19 campaign. The 27-year-old’s club future had been one of the main talking point prior to the World Cup but he made sure to clear any doubts before the start of the tournament.
Speaking in this regard, Trezeguet was pleased that Griezmann took the right decision and the attacker now has the freedom to express himself at the World Cup, he said: “He has taken the right decision, it was very important to him to announce it before the World Cup starts for his peace of mind. Now France is waiting for him to shine. It is true in these two games he faced some difficulties but we are talking about an absolutely unique player who is very important for France, and France is hoping for his game to get better.”
France had to dig deep to secure a 2-1 win over Australia in their World Cup opener and their second game versus Peru took a similar route with just a solitary goal defining the result. As such, Didier Deschamps would surely expect a much better performance against Denmark in the final group stage game where they require at least a point to top the standings.
Meanwhile, Trezeguet also happened to praise the progress of Kylian Mbappe over the past 24 months and believes the teenager alongside Griezmann have the potential to eclipse the achievements of France great Thierry Henry. Both players have looked fairly subdued with their showing during the opening phase of the World Cup and they would surely need to up their game, if they are to end Les Bleus two-decade wait for the global crown. France take on Denmark at the Luzhniki Stadium on Tuesday afternoon at the sametime when Australia tackle Peru.
